About Bernhard Arp Sindberg

Bernhard Arp Sindberg (1911–1983), known as “Mr. Xin” and “Shining Buddha”, was a Danish humanitarian who played a vital role during the Nanjing Massacre in China in 1937–1938. As a worker at a Danish cement factory near Nanjing, he gave shelter to thousands of Chinese civilians fleeing Japanese troops.

It is estimated that between 6,000 and 20,000 lives were saved through his actions. He also documented the atrocities through letters and photographs, which later became important historical evidence. Today, he is honored both in Denmark and China, and a statue was erected in his memory in Aarhus in 2019.
